Dear Apple,

Dear Apple,

I‚ve already seen the new AI Siri on the iPhone 4S in action and I can’t help but think of the way before us. Siri is a first step, but as you look closely you’ll find, that this project actually got started centuries ago and has a queer offspring. Read more on this subject here: Introducing Siri: DARPA’s Ghost in Apple’s Machine Looking at this development you just have to ask what will come next and after that. When you look at fiction there are various devices which could be part of our future: Connexus, an earpiece comm with holographic display which can be used to access the internet, write e-mails, shop, listen to music etc. as seen in the anime Appleseed Ex Machina Commlink, a combination personal computer/cell phone/PDA/wireless device available either as an implant or a head-mounted display as imagined in the roleplay universum of Shadowrun Holorecordings in Star Wars were always fascinating. Three-dimensional images or videos displayed on a holoprojector used to send messages, store knowledge and communicate directly. Taken to extremes cyberization as seen and read in the world of Ghost in the Shell: e.g. minimal cyberization of the brain where nano-scale interfaces are placed in the cerebellar region, permitting a pluggable interface by which you can communicate with others by mere thoughts and brainwaves. In all the stories problems are also displayed, yes, I know. In some cases those technologies opened a whole new world of cime. Often those are scenarios where terrorists or bad guys are trying to influence people by technology on which people learned to depend. And some of those problems will be there when you try it for real. So, safety is utmost important. There always have to be secure ways to protect the owner. And we could discuss if we want people to be more dependend on technology. It bears chances and risks. However, all new things suffer difficulties in the beginning. And if you don’t try anything new, you won’t be able to create anything. So, my wish from you, Apple, is to build a technology similar to the above which is portable, small, easy-and-safe-to-use and by which I can communicate, read, listen to music, view videos, archive, photograph, … I picked you out of all the possible companies because you always managed to inflame the people with your products. Furthermore your designs are intuitive, pretty and intelligent. Which will become more important for a technology/device which will probably be ubiquitous for people. You care for the overall experience and I trust, you are already on the case. Signed, a human looking...

Dear Chanel, Dior, L’Oréal, …

Dear Chanel, Dior, L’Oréal, …

Dear Chanel, Dior, L’Oréal, Lancôme, Maybelline… oh why just speak to some… Dear cosmetic industry, if there is one thing a woman definitely would wish for, it would be the instant make-up box as seen in the movie „The Fifth Element„. It’s an awesome movie btw. When LeeLoo finds Father Vito Cornelius after escaping in the beginning she also finds a box in his apartment, lifts it to her eyes and boom, there goes the eye make-up. From mascara to eye shadow to eyelid line, perfect. Here is a video of LeeLo with the box, please don’t mind the bad quality and chinese subtitles. For women there is always the issue to have to look good. There are some of us who set no great store to make-up but the bigger part wants to… underline our beauty in this way, some with little some with much effort. And lots of women are taking much time in the morning in front of the bathroom mirror for this effort. I, for instance, don’t take much effort but it takes up ten minutes anyway. And I’d really like to sleep a little bit longer, even if it’s just ten minutes. And if I wanna have it a little more flashy, it takes up more time and doesn’t always look the way I intended. Well, not everyone can be a make-up artist. The instant make-up box would be a great time saver and good for those of us who don’t always get it right or wanna try complicated designs. A friend of mine reminded me of something I wanted to write here too. Do you know the episode of The Simpsons (The Wizard of Evergreen Terrace) where Homer tries to invent different things? He also invents the make-up gun. Hilarious but brilliant idea. I know the cosmetic industry already treads on a similar but less clownlike way. There are products which apply eye shadow in various designs and colours. Here is an example, the colorOn Professional Instant Eye Shadow Applicators. But it’s only eye shadow and it is usable only once, then you have to buy a new one. And the designs are not really my style. It just looks like too much. However, it’s a good first step. Now add mascara, eyelid liner and the easy-to-use instant box for the application and you make a lot of women happy. Dear cosmetic industry, my wish for you today is to produce an instant make-up box and help all the women out there not to have any more bad-make-up-days. Signed, a woman   PS: The picture above bad day was found on aboutpixel.de © Christoph...

Dear George R. R. Martin,

Today, Amazon made me really happy: Hello, there is a new date of appearance for your order from March 27th 2009. The product below will be sent to you earlier than expected. George R. R. Martin „A Dance with Dragons: Book 5 of A Song of Ice and Fire /Song of Ice & Fire 5)“ Previous date of delivery: November 3rd 2011 – November 7th 2011 New date of delivery: July 15th 2011 – July 18th 2011 Of course, I immediately had to check your site and what see my unbelieving eyes: Update – A Song of Ice and Fire A Dance of Dragons done. Woohoooooo! So it is true and not like the last ten (might be a little exaggerated) updates from Amazon since – hm, let me see – 2009, which told me that the book is being delivered in a few months. And I’m waiting since 2005, where book four was released, for you to continue the saga. I kind of lost all hopes, when HBO announced that they start shooting a series about the saga. My thoughts were that you would be to busy with helping with the series and other book projects that you would never be able to finish the books. It somewhat spoiled the thought of a visual realisation for me because I’m so eager to hear the end of the story. And then I watched the first three episodes of the series which is really good btw, great casting and scenery. And it got me fired up with the story again. I like the idea that each season is telling the story of one book of the saga. But since there now are four books out and three more to go you must be in a little time pressure to finish all books. I got even more eager for you to finish the fifth book and of course the other two that are planned. Thankfully your attention finally got back to the books. I’m a huge fan of the saga A Song of Ice and Fire. It’s such a surprising and subtle fantastic saga with a lot of strong characters. You always get your readers tied in and show the story out of totally different perspectives. Because each chapter is written out of the view of another character, you get to hate one character in one chapter and then there’s a chapter out of his perspective. At first I thought, oh no, I will not enjoy to read this view. But in the contrary, one get’s to understand each view quite good. Every protagonist has its good and bad sides. A friend brought to me the idea that this fantasy saga is more like an anime which I like so much especially because of the versatility of its characters. I fell in love with this story of everything which makes us human: glory and dangers, nobility and envy, war and love, charity and jealousy, … – in short good and bad. I hope you will keep on writing and can finish the story. I know you have a huge load of fans and they would all agree. Pretty pretty pretty please, dear George R. R. Martin, tell us A Song of Ice and Fire to the end! Signed, a big big fan   PS: The picture in the thumbnail was found on Flickr © by Frederik Vandaele under the Creative Commons Licence...

Dear media,

Dear media,

I want to believe – that’s what my idol Mulder from the X-files stood for. He wanted to believe in extraterrestial life and paranormal phenomena. Well, I have to say, I sometimes feel the same way when I read, watch or hear the news. I really wanna but sometimes I just can’t. I always was a person who had faith in things which I could see or touch or hear, which I really could experience. I know that’s not always the best, but it’s my way. I often romanticized with all the different world religions. It’s just nice to have things to hold on too, to be routed in a community and to know that there is a sense to life, even if it’s just to serve this or that god or those other beeings or at the least your human counterparts. But it just didn’t feel right and I couldn’t pick out a religion for me. So I stand and rest in me. I studied Social Science – which also includes Political Science – and came to know how important it is for the people to be informed. I learned of the media as the Fourth Estate and their major role for the separation of powers in a state. And I deemed this concept right. But in the last years I have to ask myself if journalism is still a power or a puppet. In 1997 the movie Wag the Dog outlines the dilemma pretty well. Politicians who cover up embarrassing and their power endangering vanities with an array of show and fireworks. Media who take the bone gladly because it’s easy. And at last the people who believe it. What is the government trying to do with all this concealing and covering up? Why isn’t there a clever journalist who still asks probing questions? Why don’t the people demand answers? We have seen it lots of times, at last in Japan over the nuclear catastrophe. And who really tells me that Osama bin Laden is dead. They had to kill him and then they had to throw his body in the ocean. I don’t know, it just sounds cheesy to me. And then there comes Obama, the one American president, which I have great respect in and which I’d like to trust. But even this man, he also has a role to play and sometimes it acquires him to lie. And the media is making the usual fuss. But I so deeply want to believe. However, there still are some crusaders in the world who find the truth, Michael Moore is a pretty famous one for example. And I really love to watch The Colbert Report and The Daily Show. Stephen Colbert and Jon Stewart understand it to display the truth ironically. I wish I could do more too. But I’m the same as most of us: extremely busy. I don’t have the time to get to the bottom and really know the truth on everything. And I don’t want to hear alien stories in real life, that is just a hobby. We all need the media. We need them to be true, honest and not tainted by business, parties and other lobbies. So please, dear media, this is my own personal wish to you, become once again the Fourth Estate and play your true role in the Game of States. Signed, a Fan...
